A native of Raleigh, he co-founded Spectator Magazine and began writing film criticism professionally in 1978. After moving to New York in 1991, he served for a decade as chief film critic for New York Press; his writings have also appeared in The New York Times, Variety, Film Comment, The Village Voice, Interview, and other publications. He has also won three Arts Criticism awards from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. Cheshire’s areas of special interest include Iranian film, the conversion to digital cinema and cinematic representations of the American South. He is a former chairman of the New York Film Critics Circle and a member of the National Society of Film Critics.

The mission of Carteret Arts Forum is to bring enriching cultural experiences to Carteret County and surrounding areas.


Organization Statement


Carteret Arts Forum was founded in 1999 as a volunteer, non-profit organization for the benefit of Carteret County and surrounding areas.  It strives to promote and educate through the cultural arts.  Carteret Arts Forum makes a special effort to include area students and may support monetarily selected local arts endeavors and events.  Yearly subscriptions are available to the public.

Your contribution will help us achieve our goal of bringing enriching cultural experiences to Carteret County and surrounding areas.

Carteret Arts Forum strives to bring educational, entertaining, and quality programs to our subscribers and our outreach program audiences. We make a special effort to include area students by offering discount subscription rates to them and bringing programs into the schools when appropriate, allowing access to those whom might not otherwise have that exposure.  As a non-profit volunteer organization, we depend on donations such as yours to support our work.
